Simon is a Principal Lecturer in the Division of Earth and Space Sciences, where he holds several responsibilities; these include being Senior Academic Admissions Tutor for the Department of Science and Sport, and an Award Leader for BSc and MSc degrees. After nearly 15 years lecturing, Simon's interests in the Higher Education experience are broad and increasingly focus on the link between 14-19 education and admission, Student Experience, and retention/employability issues. Simon has represented the University at national conferences and consulting with UCAS/SPA on national admissions procedures. Simon's main research interests are Integrated Coastal Zone Management, coastal protection and flood defence policy. A highly qualified first aider, Simon has participated in remote expeditions as Medical Officer as far afield as Cuba and Indonesia, trekking in tropical rain forests and diving coral reefs; never lost anyone yet! Additionally, field courses regularly necessitate Simon being in Sicily, the Netherlands and Mallorca, which as a friend observed, means "taking every inch of rope offered by his wife"; I am away a lot. As a member of the GEES Steering Committee representing Wales, a member of the RGS Regional Committee South West and South Wales, and consulting on curriculum development and delivery with regional schools, when Simon is not being a geographer, he is talking about it. In his spare time (oh yes, there is a little) Simon enjoys choral singing, cycling and SCUBA diving.
