For over forty years the key strength of the workshop and seminar programme has been its breadth of scope. Traditionally this conference has uniquely blended key plenary contributions by expert speakers with an in-depth series of workshops, offering participants an excellent understanding of the cutting edge issues.

In addition to the traditional plenary and workshop sessions, the 2008 Decisions at 18 conference programme offered participants the chance to get involved by using a variety of new session formats such as Seminars, Fringe Sessions, Labour Market Information Masterclasses and Employer Insights.

Workshops

Participants had the opportunity to choose from over 50 workshops across seven sessions. These one hour workshops offered opportunities to interact with the presenters and other participants across a number of strands:

·         Practical

·         Subject focus
·         IAG/Policy focus
·         Innovation
·         Employer Insights.

The Employer Insights strand is a new platform for careers education and guidance practitioners to meet employers, to learn about career routes for both school/college leavers and graduates. These were sector based and had representatives from different organisations, including representative bodies and employers. We had Employer Insights in the following sectors:

  • accountancy
  • blue light services
  • built environment
  • IT
  • pharmaceutical
  • retail.

    Seminars

Alongside the seven workshop sessions we ran two seminar sessions. Each session included up to six seminars, lasting 80 minutes each. Seminars focussed on one particular issue in depth, involving a range of speakers and a chance to question experts.

Within the seminar programme we introduced a series the Labour Market Information (LMI) Masterclasses. These provided a clear overview of career paths, qualification routes and supply and demand, giving participants relevant and timely information for all types of client. The LMI Masterclasses disseminated original research around the career decision making of those considering these sectors as potential employers.
