Conference Outcomes
With the backdrop of the changing UK Demographic Decisions at 48: Supporting mid-life career planning set the scene for the challenges employers are facing or will face as the skills shortage becomes acute.
It is predicted that between 2010 and 2020 only 600,000 young people will enter the job market, whilst an estimated 1.3 million new jobs will be created. By 2020 22% of the workforce will be well into their sixties.
Whilst migrates will play a significant part in the make up of the workforce in 2020 it is difficult to predict how long migrants will stay in the UK and if any changes to government policy will affect both the inflow and outflow of migrants.
The conference highlighted that many organisations looking at mid-life career development as part of the diversity agenda and not in isolation, although it was recognised that formal policy and internal practice often differ, particularly in small organisations.
It was perceived that older workers may worry about initiating career discussions at work, thinking it is safer not to raise any issues they may have.
Participants recognised the tensions that can occur with intergenerational managmenet and the need for different managemnet styles to be used and for line managers to be supported and developed to ensure individuals are managed in a way that is appropriate for them
Few organisations have come to terms with the impact the shrinking labour pool will have on their business. The inaugural Decisions at 48 aimed to raise awareness of the issue and showcase practical solutions that business maybe facing. Decisions at 48 in 2008 will aim to push forward this agenda, and aid further discussion on this important issue.
