A Career Studies Manifesto
Wednesday 12 September, 5.00-6.30pm
Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London

This seminar explored the current state of career education in the UK.

The growth of career education means that it is now a subject in the curriculum from key stage three to postgraduate level.  The implications of this are far-reaching and profound. In recognition of this change, it has recently been argued that career education can now better be described as 'career studies'.

The seminar provided an opportunity to address some key questions arising from this:

  • What is the knowledge base of career studies?
  • What are the implications for our traditional models?
  • What are students thinking?

Recent 'unofficial' feedback from undergraduates will be shared with the seminar group, some of which may appear shocking. Future publications and research ideas will be discussed, and there will be an opportunity for participants to shape the future direction and content of these ideas.

The seminar was led by Phil McCash, a lecturer at Reading University, and course director for the Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and MA in Career Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education.
